Movie Review: 'Maalai Pozhuthin Mayakathilae'

Debutant filmmaker Narayana Nagendra Rao has chosen to experiment a lot in 'Maalai Pozhuthin Mayakathilae' (MPM) in terms of telling the story and putting across his message.
Movie Review: Maalai Pozhuthin Mayakathilae
The director hasn’t opted for too many characters. He has gone about making a crispy tale that happens in a coffee shop on a rainy evening. He intertwines three stories and then goes about untying the knots, so to speak.

Coming down to the story, Ajay (Aari) is an aspiring filmmaker, who is trying hard to get a chance to direct a film. He is helped by a friend but he gets in a trouble when he goes overboard in the shooting spot. Now he has lost his chance to make the film. Worse, he has to give back the money he got rom the produecer.

Dejected Ajay enters a coffee shop to relax in a rainy evening. Jiya (Subha), a bubbly looking girl, comes in and sits in front of him. Ajay is stunned to see her and he falls for her instantly. He forgets everything else and starts enjoying the conversation with her. They share their thoughts in various things including love.

Also present in the coffee shop at the time are Satish (Balaji) who comes with wife Ramya (Tejaswini) and the manager (Subbu Panchu) and his employees.

The couple (Sathish-Ramya) is apparently at loggerheads and on the verge of a split. The manager has issues to be solved in his business. There is a writer (R.S. Sivaji) who is witness to all this.

Ajay opens his heart to Jiya but she thinks love is just a chemical reaction. Ajay tries to tell her something different. She leaves the place with her typical smile without telling any reply to him.

Satish comes out of the premises for a while and meets the manager with whom he shares his feelings. The manager shares a few thoughts which make Sathish look his life in a different light. He is now confident that he could settle the issues with his wife amicably.

Is he able to convince his wife and make her feel close to him again? Does Jiya come back in Ajay’s life?

Watch the movie to know the answers.

The movie is visually pleasing and the performances are quite competent. The dialogues are very effective. The problem with the movie is that it doesn’t move forward. Actually it has nothing to push forward, as there are no incidents. The director, who has shown some strong visual sense in many scenes, could have created some interesting incidents to tell the story. Everything starts and ends with the conversations and that is the major drawback of the story. It feels like reading a book rather than watching a movie. As a result the movie looks like stagnated tank water rather than a moving river. The movie gives a boring eexerience.

Aari and Subha do justice to their roles. Sudha looks cute. Tejaswini and Balaji are impressive. Sivaji and Subbu Panju are competent.Achu's music is good and his background score is excellent.Gopi Amarnath's cinematography is one of the high points of the movie.

The visually pleasing movie fails to impress, as it lacks pace with very little incidents.
